Description

This 2m plug-in extension lead lengthens the lead between a step's LED tape and the driver or controller. On a lit staircase the driver usually sits in an under-stairs cupboard or ceiling void, and the steps furthest from it are often beyond the reach of the tape's own lead. Plug the extension in between and the reel reaches the driver with no soldering and no joints to hide. It is made in three versions to match our natural white tape and our tunable white and RGB tape, with a socket at one end and a plug at the other. Installers, electricians and homeowners use it to place the driver where it suits the building, not where the leads happen to reach.

Why it works

Put the driver where it belongs

The driver must stay dry, ventilated and permanently accessible. That place is not always close to the stairs. Extension leads let you keep the driver in the right position and still reach every step, including the top of a tall flight.

Plug-in, no soldering

The plug and socket match the tape and driver connections, so the lead simply plugs in between. There are no soldered joints to fail or insulate, and a run can be unplugged later for maintenance.

Matched to the tape

Natural white, tunable white and RGB tapes use different connections, so each extension is made for one type. Choosing the matching version keeps every function of the tape working through the lead.

  • 2m long
  • Natural white, tunable white or RGB version
  • Plug at one end, socket at the other
  • No soldering

Where it's used

Tall staircases where the top steps are far from the driver. Staircases where the driver sits in a loft hatch, ceiling void or plant room. Split-level and curved stairs with long cable routes. Commercial stairwells with drivers grouped in a riser cupboard.

Choosing the right option

Choose the version that matches the tape on that step: natural white, tunable white or RGB. Then measure the cable route from each step to the driver or controller, following the path the cable will actually take, and compare it with the tape's own lead. Order one extension for each run that falls short. Extension leads add length to the circuit, so keep the total of tape and leads on each 12V run to 10m or less to avoid the far end dimming. If many steps need long leads, it can be better to place the driver nearer the stairs or split the flight across two drivers.

Installation, use and care

Route the extension through the void or behind the stair stringer before the steps are finished, leaving a little slack at both ends. Plug the tape lead into the socket end and the plug end into the driver, controller or connector block. Clip the lead neatly so it cannot be pulled or pinched. The driver's mains connection must be made by a qualified electrician.

FAQ

Q: Can I join two extensions?
A: Yes, but keep each 12V run, tape plus leads, to 10m or less.

Q: Will the natural white lead work with RGB tape?
A: No. Choose the version that matches the tape.

Q: Do I need to solder anything?
A: No. Both ends plug in.

Q: How long is it?
A: 2m.
