Anodised Aluminium LVT Stair Nosing 42x28mm for 5mm Click Vinyl

If you are fitting 5mm click or dry-back luxury vinyl tile on a staircase, the one detail the plank cannot do on its own is the front edge of each step. Vinyl will not wrap a corner, and a bare plank edge on a stair front chips, lifts and becomes a trip point. This anodised aluminium stair nosing is made for exactly that job: a 42mm flange sits under the plank, a 7mm rounded lip finishes the tread edge flush with the vinyl, and a 28mm leg covers the front of the step. Why it works

A recess sized for 5mm vinyl

The profile is an open L-section. The flange lies flat on the tread and forms a 5mm-deep recess behind the lip, so a 5mm plank drops in and finishes level with the top of the nosing. There is no step up or down at the edge, which matters on a stair because a raised lip catches toes and a sunken one exposes the vinyl edge to wear. Only the 7mm lip is visible once the floor is laid, so the metal reads as a slim line along each step rather than a heavy face plate.

Anodised aluminium, not painted

Aluminium keeps the profile light and easy to cut, and anodising hardens the surface and locks the colour into the metal instead of sitting on top as a coating. That means the Black, Gold, Silver and Champagne finishes resist scuffing from shoes and vacuum heads far better than a sprayed trim, and they will not rust in a warm, dry stairwell. Anodised finishes are still a surface treatment, so a heavy knock will mark them; state this plainly to a client and it rarely comes up again.

Screw-fixed for stairs

Each length is supplied with four wall plugs and screws. The flange is fixed down through the tread before the plank is laid, so the fixings end up hidden under the vinyl and the nosing cannot creep the way an adhesive-only trim can under repeated footfall on a step edge.

Where it's used

The typical job is a domestic staircase being re-floored in click vinyl, with the treads and often the risers clad in plank. It is also used on split-level landings and single steps into kitchens and conservatories, on communal stairs in flats and small offices where the floor build-up is 5mm LVT, and in showrooms and retail units with a short stepped change of level. It is an interior profile; it is not intended for external steps or for areas that are regularly wet.

Choosing the right option

Measure the thickness of your plank first. This profile is cut for 5mm floors; a 4mm plank will sit slightly below the lip and a 6mm plank will stand proud, and neither is acceptable on a stair edge. If your vinyl is 3mm or thinner, look at our nosings for thinner LVT instead.

Then measure the width of your treads. Most domestic stairs are between 800mm and 900mm wide, so one 900mm length covers one step with a little to trim. For wider stairs, winders or long runs, the 2700mm length cuts into three standard treads with less waste, and it is the more economical way to buy for a full flight.

On colour, Silver is the safe choice against grey and whitewashed oak planks, Black gives a crisp line on dark or contrasting risers, and Gold and Champagne suit warm honey oaks and traditional interiors. Order one length first if you want to check a finish against your floor in situ.

Installation, use and care

Cut the nosing to the tread width with a fine-tooth hacksaw or a mitre saw fitted with a non-ferrous blade, and file the cut end. Sit the profile on the step with the leg tight to the riser, mark and drill the flange, plug the tread and screw down so the flange is flat. Lay the plank into the recess, adhering or clicking it as the flooring manufacturer specifies, so it butts up to the back of the lip. If the riser is being clad in vinyl, fit the riser plank before the nosing so the leg covers its top edge. Clean with a damp cloth and a mild detergent; avoid abrasive pads and solvent cleaners on anodised finishes.
