Rake-back stairs are common in schools, offices and public stairwells, and they are where a square nosing goes wrong: its leg stands off the leaning riser and the edge rocks underfoot. This DDA stair nosing is made for that step. A 70mm tread plate carries a slip-resistant insert, a deep 56mm leg leans back to sit flat on the raked riser, and the back of the plate ramps down so vinyl, LVT or timber finishes flush. Nine finishes, five inserts, three lengths.
70 x 56mm rake back DDA profile with ramped back. Dimensions in mm.
Why this nosing works
A leg that matches the step
The leg is raked, not square, so on a rake-back step the nosing beds down along its whole depth with no hollow at the foot to flex or crack the adhesive.
Contrast on both faces, at the width the regulations ask for
Approved Document K asks for a contrasting band at least 55mm wide on both tread and riser in buildings other than dwellings. This profile gives 70mm and 56mm. Insert LRVs run from Obsidian at 1.80 to Everest at 58.00; Approved Document M treats a difference of more than 30 points as adequate contrast.
Two grip grades for two kinds of stair
High Grip is textured PVC for dry internal stairs, rated 95 dry and 60 wet on the pendulum. Exterior Grip is gel-coated GRP with fused grit, above 95 dry and above 85 wet, General Purpose grade for fire. Over 36 is low slip potential.
A ramped back instead of a lip
Behind the insert the aluminium tapers onto the floor, leaving no edge to catch a heel.
Where it is used
Raked concrete and timber stairs in schools, offices, surgeries and residential blocks, finished in safety vinyl, LVT or wood; with Exterior Grip, entrance flights and covered external steps. For square-edged steps there is the 70 x 56mm square-edge DDA profile, also offered with a PVC insert in a wide colour range.

Profile
Rake back with ramped back, single channel (DDA range)
Check the step. Hold a square against the riser: if it leans back from the nosing line, this is your profile.
Insert by conditions, then contrast. High Grip for dry internal stairs, Exterior Grip where it can get wet. Obsidian or Coal on pale floors; Solar, Brimstone or Everest on dark and mid-tone floors.
Finish last. Mill Finish is the working choice; Satin Black and the bronzes recede into dark schemes; Satin Gold, Bright Polished and the Mirrorflect finishes are for stairs where the metal is meant to be seen.
Installation, use and care
Make good damaged edges, then clean and dry the step. Push the nosing down and back against the raked riser and mark through the drill holes; on concrete, drill and plug, with corrosion-resistant fixings outside. Bed on cartridge adhesive and screw down. Lay the floor tight to the foot of the ramp. Sweep the insert regularly; wash with water and neutral detergent.
Fixings and adhesive are not included; tell us the substrate and we will quote them.
Frequently asked questions
Will this nosing fit a square-edged step?
No. The leg is raked to sit flat on a riser that leans back, so on a square edge it stands off at the foot. Choose the 70 x 56mm square-edge DDA profile instead.
High Grip or Exterior Grip?
High Grip (textured PVC, 95 dry / 60 wet) is for dry internal stairs. Exterior Grip (gritted GRP, above 95 dry / above 85 wet) is for entrances, wet flights and outside steps. If the step can get wet, take Exterior Grip.
Is it Building Regs compliant?
The profile is classed as Building Regulations compliant: its 70mm tread and 56mm riser faces exceed the 55mm contrasting band in Approved Document K. Use the published LRVs to show contrast against your floor.
How many steps will one length cover?
Allowing for saw cuts, a 2.44m bar gives two 1.2m steps, a 2.75m bar two 1.35m steps, and a 3.22m bar three 1.05m steps.

Works a treat for the price. Couldnt argue with how budget-friendly it is compared to other options Ive seen around. Installed on tight bends in our old hotels lobby, and the stair nosing fits snugly with just the right ramp--it really minimises those pesky tripping spots.

Had to sort out the persistent hazard where our office carpet met the vinyl in the entryway. This inconspicuous protecting strip fit right in with the modern aesthetic of our building and makes transitions seamless, even under heavy foot traffic. Youd hardly notice its there unless youre really looking closely, but it does the job unobtrusively every day.

Came surprisingly prompt, and though it gets on my nerves when raindrops pool alongside, the installation was worth every quid for a bustling spot like ours. The grip underfoot is decent even when it drizzles, making this aluminium stair nosing an overlooked gem during peak hours.

Got this for the shopping mall steps and its added such a slick finish between carpet and marble. The stair nosing blends in perfectly whilst keeping everyone safe as they go up and down - great peace of mind for the money spent. Loved how easy it was to install, feels built to last!

Wasnt sure at first about committing to an aluminium option, but its been spot on. Coming well-packaged was a relief, especially with the kids around when it was being fitted. Once in place, the stair nosing settled seamlessly along my stairs and retains a crisp look without detracting from its purpose.

Installed it on the stairs in our local library last year. Despite a bit of grumbling over spare weekends spent to fit it, Im pretty chuffed with how straightforward it was and thrilled that its taken all those muddy feet battering without needing any fuss since.

Proper solid nosing, this. It was easy to cut down to size and fit on the stairs at our old hotel. Definitely made those steps less of a hazard with its neat design and smooth fix – you hardly notice the transition now.
