Self-Adhesive Aluminium Stair Nosing 30mm x 20mm

Retro-fitting a stair edge usually means drilling into a tread you would rather not disturb. This aluminium nosing avoids that entirely: a full-length adhesive strip on the underside bonds it straight onto a finished step, so a worn or exposed edge can be covered in an afternoon with nothing more than a mitre saw and a cloth. At 30mm across the tread and 20mm down the riser it is a slim profile, sized to tidy an edge rather than rebuild it, and it comes in five finishes including two wood effects that read as part of the floor rather than a strip laid over it.

Why it works

Nothing to drill

The adhesive is applied across the full length of the flat leg, not in spots, so load is spread along the whole bond line. That matters on a laminate or LVT tread where a screw would break the wear layer and let moisture into the core. It also means no plugs, no countersinking, and no filling later if you ever lift it.

Aluminium under the finish

The body is extruded aluminium, so the edge takes impact without denting the way a plastic trim does, and it will not swell, split or telegraph a joint the way a timber nosing can in a heated hallway. The wood-effect and coloured finishes are applied to the metal, so the strength is the same whichever you choose.

A defined edge

Fine grooves run along the tread face, breaking up the surface where the foot lands. Approved Document K and BS 8300 both ask that a step nosing be visually distinguishable from the tread; matt black or bronze against a pale floor does that readily, while oak and matt brass are chosen where the priority is blending in. Decide which of those two jobs you are asking the nosing to do before you pick a finish.

Retro-fit work above all: covering a chipped or exposed step edge after laminate or LVT has been laid, tidying an edge where the flooring stops short, or protecting a newly finished stair without putting fixings through it. Common in flats and rented properties where drilling is restricted, in home offices and loft conversions, and in light commercial interiors such as small shops and consulting rooms.

Choosing the right option

Measure the finished width of the tread and buy the length that yields whole steps with least waste. Most UK domestic stairs are 850–900mm wide, which is why the 0.9m covers exactly one step; the longer lengths are cut down.

On finish: oak and matt brass warm up beech, oak and walnut floors; matt silver suits grey LVT and most commercial schemes; matt black and bronze give the strongest visual contrast on a pale tread, which is the safer choice where a stair is used by older people or in poor light.

Installation, use and care

Cut to length with a fine-tooth blade in a mitre saw or hacksaw and file the cut end. The bond is only as good as the surface underneath, so clean the step edge with methylated spirit or a similar solvent wipe and let it dry fully — dust, polish residue and underfloor-heating warmth all weaken adhesion. Dry-fit first, peel the liner back from one end, align the nosing to the step edge, then press down firmly along the whole length. Leave 24 hours before heavy use. Clean with warm water and a neutral detergent; avoid abrasive pads, which will scuff the finish.

FAQ

Will it hold on a stair in daily use?
On a clean, sound, non-porous edge, yes. On a dusty, waxed, flexing or freshly painted surface the bond will fail. Where the stair takes heavy commercial traffic, a screw-fixed nosing is the more durable choice.

Can I use it on carpeted stairs?
No. Adhesive needs a hard, smooth surface. For carpet, choose a screw-fixed nosing that clamps the carpet edge down instead.

Can it be removed later?
It can be lifted with gentle heat and a plastic wedge, but expect adhesive residue and treat removal as one-way on a delicate finish.

Is a slip resistance rating published?
No. A tested R value or pendulum figure is not published for this line. Where a specification demands a certified rating, choose a nosing supplied with test data.
