What is a PVC Floor Transition Strip?

A PVC floor transition strip is a flat, flexible edging profile that bridges the gap between two different flooring surfaces at a junction point — typically a doorway, room threshold, or change in flooring type within an open-plan space. Unlike rigid aluminium alternatives, PVC transition strips are softer underfoot, slightly flexible to accommodate minor subfloor imperfections, and considerably easier to cut and install. The self-adhesive backing on this strip makes it one of the most DIY-friendly floor finishing products available — no specialist tools required.

Choosing Your Width and Length

5cm Wide Wider floor gaps, commercial settings, or where additional coverage is needed — offices, retail, open-plan transitions.
3m Roll Single doorway up to 3m wide, or smaller rooms. Covers one standard UK doorway with length to spare.
6m Roll Multiple doorways from one roll, longer open-plan transitions, commercial applications, or where you want to avoid joins.

Colour Matching Guide

Colour Appearance Works Best With
Grey Mid-tone grey PVC, subtle sheen Grey carpets, slate tiles, light or dark laminate, LVT planks, concrete-effect flooring
Black Deep matte black PVC Dark wood flooring, anthracite tiles, charcoal carpet, contemporary black and white interiors

Key Features and Benefits

  • No-tool self-adhesive installation — the integrated pressure-sensitive backing bonds directly to the subfloor surface. Clean the floor, peel the red liner, press firmly. No drilling, no screws, no adhesive tubes.
  • Scissors-cut to length — standard household scissors cut cleanly through the PVC material. Mark your measurement, cut straight, and the strip ends cleanly without fraying or cracking.
  • Ultra-low 4mm profile — the flat profile sits barely above floor level, effectively eliminating a trip hazard at floor junctions. Ideal in high-footfall areas including hallways, kitchens and offices.
  • Flexible PVC adapts to minor undulations — unlike rigid metal profiles, the PVC flexes slightly to follow minor variations in subfloor level, maintaining contact and preventing lifting at the edges.
  • Durable and cleanable — the PVC surface wipes clean with a damp cloth. Resists everyday foot traffic, vacuum cleaner wheels and cleaning equipment.
  • Versatile application — equally suited to residential and light commercial use, including offices, retail spaces, schools and hospitality environments.

Where to Use

  • Hallway to living room transitions (carpet to laminate)
  • Kitchen doorway thresholds (vinyl or tile to carpet)
  • Bedroom doorways (carpet to landing laminate or LVT)
  • Office floor transitions between carpet tiles and hard flooring
  • Bathroom and en-suite doorways (tile to hallway flooring)
  • Open-plan spaces where flooring types change
  • Retail and commercial threshold strips

⚠️ Note: This is an indoor floor transition strip designed for level or near-level floor junctions. It is not suitable for height-difference transitions of more than 4mm between two floor surfaces — for that application, consider a ramp-profile or Z-bar threshold strip.

How to Install

  1. Measure your floor gap. Measure the width of the doorway or transition point where the strip will sit. Add 10mm to your measurement to allow for a clean cut.
  2. Cut to length. Use scissors or a sharp knife to cut the PVC strip to your required length. Cut square across the strip for a neat finish.
  3. Clean the subfloor surface. Sweep or vacuum the area, then wipe with a slightly damp cloth to remove dust and grease. Allow to dry completely — the adhesive bonds best to a clean, dry surface.
  4. Position the strip. Lay the strip across the floor junction to confirm fit and alignment before peeling the backing. Centre it equally over the gap between the two floor surfaces.
  5. Peel one end of the backing. Partially peel the red adhesive backing from one end of the strip, keeping the rest covered.
  6. Press and fix. Starting at one end, press the strip firmly down while peeling away the remaining backing. Apply firm hand pressure along the entire length, holding for 30 seconds.
  7. Final check. Walk over the strip to seat it fully. The strip is ready to use immediately, though adhesive bond strength continues to improve over 24 hours.

Frequently Asked Questions

What floor types does this transition strip work on?

This PVC strip works on virtually any smooth, clean hard flooring surface including laminate, LVT, engineered wood, hardwood, ceramic tile, porcelain tile, and vinyl. On the opposing side it transitions neatly against carpet of any pile height, including thick-pile and loop-pile carpets. The key requirement is that the subfloor is clean, dry and reasonably flat.

Can I cut the strip to a shorter length?

Yes — the PVC material cuts cleanly with standard household scissors or a sharp craft knife. Score and snap also works well. Cut square across the strip. There is no need for specialist cutting tools. Any offcuts can be used for a second smaller doorway if needed.

Will it stay fixed once installed?

The self-adhesive backing creates a strong, permanent bond to clean hard flooring surfaces. Bond strength is immediate but increases significantly over the first 24 hours as the adhesive cures. For maximum adhesion, ensure the subfloor surface is completely free of dust, moisture and any floor wax or polish before installation.

Which width should I choose — 4cm or 5cm?

For most standard UK residential doorways and carpet-to-laminate transitions, the 4cm (40mm) width is the right choice. It covers the typical expansion gap between two floor types while remaining visually unobtrusive. The 5cm (50mm) width is better suited to wider floor gaps, commercial settings where a more substantial covering strip is required, or where the transition zone is slightly irregular.

What is the difference between the 3m and 6m rolls?

A standard UK internal doorway is typically 762mm to 838mm wide. A 3m roll therefore covers up to 3 to 4 standard doorways when cut to size. The 6m roll is ideal if you have several doorways to do in one go, a longer open-plan transition, or want to have spare material to use in future without ordering again.

Is this suitable for commercial use?

Yes — this PVC transition strip performs well in light to medium commercial environments including offices, retail units, schools, hospitality venues and healthcare facilities. The flat 4mm profile complies with typical threshold trip hazard guidelines and the durable PVC surface withstands regular foot traffic, trolleys and cleaning equipment.

Does the grey colour match most flooring?

Grey is one of the most versatile neutral tones in flooring — it coordinates with the majority of modern UK flooring choices including grey-toned LVT, slate and stone effect tiles, light oak laminate, anthracite carpet and contemporary wood-effect planks. If your flooring features strong warm tones (terracotta, deep brown), the black option often provides a better contrast finish.

Can I remove the strip once installed?

The self-adhesive backing is designed for permanent installation, but the strip can be removed carefully using a flat scraper or palette knife worked along the underside edge. Apply gentle heat with a hairdryer to soften the adhesive if needed. Some adhesive residue may remain on the subfloor, which can be removed with adhesive remover or white spirit.

Works a treat for covering that gap in our offices busy hallway where carpet meets vinyl, and the subtle finish is quite sleek up close. Naturally, it blends the spaces beautifully without losing any style. More bang for your buck compared to other options, but did take a bit of elbow grease to cut it just right with my scissors!

Had to sort out a troublesome gap between my living room carpet and the kitchen laminate in our apartment. Using this smart strip was straightforward — it required no more than peeling back its adhesive, pressing it down, and calling it done. A month on, its still holding firm despite regular footfall and primping the transition nicely.

Came promptly and was just eager to see how this sticky floor strip would look in use. Nestled between moist outdoor tiles and my indoor dining bamboo, the visual blend is quite satisfying. Admittedly, I had reservations during those overcast days when slips seem likely, but amazingly it held its own sturdily at the threshold.
