Self Adhesive PVC Stair Nosing 50mm x 42mm, Anti-Slip for Safe Stairs

Some stairs cannot take a rigid nosing. A worn concrete step with a rounded arris, a tiled edge that is slightly out of true, a carpeted flight where the covering varies in thickness from step to step — screw a hard aluminium angle onto any of those and it rocks. This profile is flexible PVC, so it takes up the shape of the edge it is fitted to and stays in contact along its whole length. It wraps 50mm across the tread and 42mm down the riser, arriving as a self-adhesive length you cut with a knife and press down. Five colours, from high-visibility yellow to discreet brown.

Why it works

It bends to the step, not the other way round

The PVC is formulated to flex and then hold its shape, so the profile can be pressed over a slightly rounded or uneven nose and will not spring back off it. That is the practical difference from a metal nosing: no packing, no grinding the edge flat first, no gaps where the profile bridges a hollow and a heel can catch it.

The grooves do the gripping

The tread face is corrugated along its whole length rather than carrying a separate insert. There is nothing to come loose, nothing to replace, and the grooves shed water and grit into the channels instead of holding it on the surface. It also means the anti-slip element cannot be lost — a common failure on insert-type nosings in buildings where maintenance is thin.

Colour does real work here

Approved Document K and BS 8300 both ask that a step nosing be visually distinguishable from the tread. Yellow against grey concrete is the strongest contrast available and is why it dominates in schools, plant rooms and car parks. Red carries the same visibility with a warning read. Black, grey and brown are the choices where the nosing needs to disappear into a domestic or hotel scheme rather than announce itself.

Choosing the right option

Lengths are not offered across every colour on this profile, so check the pairing before you count your steps. What is stocked is set out below.

Measure the finished tread width and buy the length that yields whole steps with least offcut. The 2.0m covers two standard domestic steps; the 1.1m and 1.2m cover one each with a trim allowance. Allow for the plus or minus 5mm tolerance when you are cutting to a tight reveal.

Installation, use and care

Cut to length with a sharp knife or scissors — no saw needed, and no swarf. The bond is only as good as the surface beneath it, so wipe the step edge with methylated spirit and let it dry fully; dust, polish and damp concrete all weaken adhesion. Dry-fit first, peel the liner from one end, align the profile to the nose, then press down firmly along the whole length working outward from the middle. Leave it 24 hours before heavy traffic. Clean with warm water and a neutral detergent; avoid solvents and abrasive pads, which will dull the surface and open up the grooves.

FAQ

Will it fit over an uneven or rounded step edge?
Yes, that is what the flexible PVC is for. It presses onto a rounded or slightly irregular nose and holds that shape, where a rigid metal angle would rock or leave a gap.

Can I fit it over carpet or tiles?
Yes. It is designed to go over a finished covering of any thickness, provided the surface it bonds to is firm, clean and dry.

Is there an anti-slip insert to replace?
No. The grip comes from grooves moulded into the PVC itself, so there is no insert to wear out, work loose or go missing.

Is a slip resistance rating published?
No. A tested R value or pendulum figure is not published for this line. Where a specification demands a certified rating, choose a nosing supplied with test data.
