Description

Some stairs cannot take a rigid nosing. A worn concrete step with a rounded arris, a tiled edge that is slightly out of true, a carpeted flight where the covering varies in thickness from step to step — screw a hard aluminium angle onto any of those and it rocks. This profile is flexible PVC, so it takes up the shape of the edge it is fitted to and stays in contact along its whole length. It wraps 50mm across the tread and 42mm down the riser, arriving as a length you cut with a knife and bond down with a suitable adhesive. Five colours, from high-visibility yellow to discreet brown.

Why it works

It bends to the step, not the other way round

The PVC is formulated to flex and then hold its shape, so the profile can be pressed over a slightly rounded or uneven nose and will not spring back off it. That is the practical difference from a metal nosing: no packing, no grinding the edge flat first, no gaps where the profile bridges a hollow and a heel can catch it.

The grooves do the gripping

The tread face is corrugated along its whole length rather than carrying a separate insert. There is nothing to come loose, nothing to replace, and the grooves shed water and grit into the channels instead of holding it on the surface. It also means the anti-slip element cannot be lost — a common failure on insert-type nosings in buildings where maintenance is thin.

Colour does real work here

Approved Document K and BS 8300 both ask that a step nosing be visually distinguishable from the tread. Yellow against grey concrete is the strongest contrast available and is why it dominates in schools, plant rooms and car parks. Red carries the same visibility with a warning read. Black, grey and brown are the choices where the nosing needs to disappear into a domestic or hotel scheme rather than announce itself.

Where it's used

Concrete steps in plant rooms, car parks, loading bays and external fire escapes. Communal stairs in flats and student accommodation where the carpet is tired but the structure is sound. Schools, village halls and community buildings needing a visible edge without a contractor on site. Retro-fitting a tiled or panelled stair where drilling would crack the finish.

Choosing the right option

Lengths are not offered across every colour on this profile, so check the pairing before you count your steps. What is stocked is set out below.

Colour Lengths available Typical use
Yellow 1.2m, 2.0m Highest contrast — industrial, education, car parks
Red 1.1m Warning edges and hazard marking
Black 1.1m, 1.5m, 2.0m Commercial interiors, dark floor coverings
Grey 1.1m, 1.5m, 2.0m Concrete and grey vinyl, low-key finish
Brown 1.8m Domestic and hotel carpet schemes

Measure the finished tread width and buy the length that yields whole steps with least offcut. The 2.0m covers two standard domestic steps; the 1.1m and 1.2m cover one each with a trim allowance. Allow for the plus or minus 5mm tolerance when you are cutting to a tight reveal.

Installation, use and care

Cut to length with a sharp knife or scissors — no saw needed, and no swarf. The bond is only as good as the surface beneath it, so wipe the step edge with methylated spirit and let it dry fully; dust, polish and damp concrete all weaken adhesion. Dry-fit first, then apply a PVC-compatible contact or assembly adhesive to the back of the profile, align it to the nose and press down firmly along the whole length working outward from the middle. Leave it 24 hours before heavy traffic. Clean with warm water and a neutral detergent; avoid solvents and abrasive pads, which will dull the surface and open up the grooves.

FAQ

Will it fit over an uneven or rounded step edge?
Yes, that is what the flexible PVC is for. It presses onto a rounded or slightly irregular nose and holds that shape, where a rigid metal angle would rock or leave a gap.

Can I fit it over carpet or tiles?
Yes. It is designed to go over a finished covering of any thickness, provided the surface it bonds to is firm, clean and dry.

Is there an anti-slip insert to replace?
No. The grip comes from grooves moulded into the PVC itself, so there is no insert to wear out, work loose or go missing.

Is a slip resistance rating published?
No. A tested R value or pendulum figure is not published for this line. Where a specification demands a certified rating, choose a nosing supplied with test data.

At this price, I was expecting something that might clash with my parking garage’s uneven floor surface, but it works seamlessly. The pvc stair nosing adhered neatly against the worn concrete and doesn’t shift even under heavy usage. Happy with how easy it was to put in place – no fuss required.

Works a treat for what it costs. I used this on the museums stone steps, and its proving to be great value compared to more expensive options without sacrificing reliability. The stair nosing sticks well and handles frequent foot traffic with ease. Id go for this budget-friendly solution again if needed.

Had to sort out the dodgy fire escape with something robust yet adaptable. This flexible edging did the trick, navigating the uneven ridges like a champ as it clings remarkably well without causing a fuss. Been sunny and rainy since I put it up—still sticks fast where I left it amidst pretty constant office foot traffic. Worth every penny given the grim alternative options!

Arrived in robust packaging, and Ive got to say, laying it on the old wooden cellar stair was easier than expected. Every step now feels secure, especially useful with everyone trooping up and down from the laundry nearly round-the-clock. When its damp downstairs, you can depend on the fantastic grip of this stuff; I barely notice anything underfoot other than its steady feel.

Wasnt sure at first if pvc self adhesive stair nosing was the right fit, but I couldnt be happier with what arrived. The finish looks surprisingly sleek and blends in well with our mall stairs while handling all the daily foot traffic. Its packaging kept everything intact, and each piece stuck down effortlessly without any of the frustrations Ive had with other products.

Installed it on the brick steps leading out to the garden. After a few months of trampling by family and pets alike, its still resilient with no signs of wearing away. I expected something less durable, but it really holds up well against both bright sun and damp weather while maintaining its grip.

Perfectly adaptable fit! I used this nifty PVC self adhesive stair nosing to give the entrances of our local museum a safer edge. It was super straightforward to snip down to just the right length, and its flexibility meant it adhered like a charm over some decidedly uneven stone steps. So far, its holding its ground beautifully — visitors can now step with confidence!
