Fitting over a different thickness leaves a step or a gap at the tread edge, so check your flooring's stated thickness before ordering rather than the finished plank width. For finish, lacquered suits a floor that is already satin-lacquered from the same range; unfinished is the right choice if you plan to site, stain or oil the nosing to match a bespoke floor colour once fitted; smoked and smoked-and-white-oiled are pre-toned to match fumed and whitewashed oak ranges without further finishing. Use the 0.9m length for a single standard UK stair tread and the 2.35m length for wide stairs, landings or where you are fitting several short pieces from one board to reduce joins.

Installation, use & care

Cut to length with a fine-tooth saw, test-fit the rebate over the tread edge, then fix with a flooring adhesive suited to solid wood and pin through the top face into the tread below, punching and filling the pin holes before finishing. Unfinished nosing should be sanded flush with the adjoining floor before staining or oiling so the sheen matches. Clean with a barely damp cloth and a wood-safe floor cleaner; avoid saturating the joint line with water, which is the main cause of a nosing lifting over time. FAQ

Will the unfinished nosing match my existing lacquered oak floor?
Not until it's finished. Sand it flush, then apply the same lacquer or oil and number of coats used on your floor so the sheen and tone match once cured.

Can I fit this over a laminate or LVT floor instead of real wood?
No. This is a solid timber profile sized to oak floor thicknesses; laminate and LVT stairs need a nosing designed for those thinner, harder-wearing surfaces.

What if my stair tread is wider than 2.35m?
Order two lengths and join them with a neat butt joint positioned away from the most heavily walked centre of the tread, then fill and finish the joint to disguise it.

Does the smoked finish fade in sunlight?
All timber finishes will mellow slightly with UV exposure over years, the same as any oak floor near a window; this is a natural, gradual colour change rather than a defect.
