Wood Effect Door Threshold Ramp 31mm Self Adhesive Aluminium

A doorway where laminate meets vinyl, or tile meets a thinner sheet floor, nearly always leaves a step of a few millimetres. Left open, that gap collects grit, the exposed board edge begins to chip, and people catch their toes on it. This ramp threshold closes it without a single hole drilled in your floor. It is a slim aluminium profile, 31mm across and 11mm at its highest point, carrying a wood-effect finish on the face so it reads as part of the floor rather than as a metal bar laid over it. The adhesive is already applied to the underside: cut the bar to the width of your opening, peel the backing and press it down.

Why it works

An aluminium core keeps its shape

The profile is extruded aluminium rather than plastic. A doorway is the busiest square metre in most homes, and a trim that flexes under a loaded trolley, a vacuum or a pushchair wheel will lift at the edges within months. An aluminium extrusion holds its section, so the thin leading edge stays down on the lower floor and the adhesive stays in contact with it.

The ramp is doing the real work

Seen end-on the bar is a shallow wedge. It stands 11mm high at the back, then falls away across 31mm to an edge thin enough to walk over without noticing. A small return leg tucks underneath the high side and covers the cut edge of the thicker covering, so a raw laminate board end or a trimmed vinyl edge disappears. A finish meant to blend, not contrast

The face carries a wood-effect decor in twenty-five shades, from the very pale Arctic Oak and White Pine through mid oaks and cherries to Congo Wenge and African Ebony. The point of a wood finish on a threshold is that it stops being noticed; a silver or gold bar draws a line across the doorway, where a matched oak reads as a continuation of the floor.

Choosing the right option

Measure the opening between the two door linings, not the door itself, and buy the next length up. A standard internal doorway in the UK is 762mm or 838mm wide, so the 900mm bar covers both with a little to trim. The 2700mm length is for wide openings, bifold and sliding runs, or for cutting several standard doorways from one bar, which usually works out cheaper per doorway than buying three short pieces.

On colour, work to the higher of the two floors. The ramp sits on top of that covering, so matching it is what makes the trim vanish. If the two floors are very different in tone, a mid shade between them reads better than an exact match to either. Order a length in one finish before committing to a whole house if you are unsure, since screens render wood decors differently.

Installation, use and care

Cut to length with a fine-tooth hacksaw and file the cut end smooth. Both surfaces must be clean, dry and free of dust, polish or underfloor-heating residue; wipe with methylated spirit and let it flash off. Peel the backing strip, position the bar in one go rather than sliding it into place, and press firmly along the whole length. Leave it a few hours before heavy traffic. Clean with a damp cloth and mild detergent. Avoid abrasive pads and solvent cleaners, which will dull the decorative finish.

Frequently asked questions

Will it hold on vinyl or a painted floor?

On clean, sound sheet vinyl and LVT, yes. On freshly painted or heavily polished surfaces the adhesive grips the coating rather than the floor, so on those a bead of grab adhesive along the underside is the safer route.

What is the largest step it will cover?

Around 9mm. Beyond that the ramp cannot meet the lower floor cleanly and you want a deeper profile instead.

Can I use it over underfloor heating?

Yes. Aluminium is unaffected by the temperatures involved. Fit it when the system is cold and off, then bring the heating back up slowly.

Does it come with fixings?

No fixings are needed. The adhesive is already applied under a peel-off backing strip; nothing is drilled, plugged or screwed.

Can it be lifted again later?

It is intended as a permanent fixing. It can be taken up with a scraper and patience, but the adhesive will not re-bond, so plan on a fresh bar if you lift it.
