Description
The Heavy Duty Aluminium Stair Nosing is a professional-grade 63x32mm extruded aluminium stair edge profile fitted with a coloured slip-resistant PVC insert. Engineered specifically for high-traffic environments, this stair nosing significantly reduces the risk of slips, trips and falls by providing a clearly defined, grippy leading edge on every step. The bold contrast between the aluminium body and the coloured PVC tread meets the requirements of the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) and BS 8300 for visual contrast on stairways, making it the ideal choice for any commercial, public or residential building where accessible, safe staircases are essential.
Available in 6 standard cut lengths (1m, 1.5m, 2m, 2.46m, 2.77m and 3.22m) and 11 PVC insert colours (Beige, Black, Brown, Canvas, Cobalt Blue, Dolphine Grey, Ice Grey, Mid Grey, Red, White and Yellow), this nosing can be specified to match or contrast any floor finish. The aluminium profile can also be cut to size on site, minimising waste and installation time.
Why Choose the Stair Nosing?
- Rake-back heavy-duty profile — the 63mm tread x 32mm riser rake-back design sits flush against vertical risers, eliminating trip hazards and giving a clean, professional finish.
- DDA & BS 8300 compliant — when the correct contrasting colour is selected, this nosing fulfils DDA visual contrast requirements and supports accessibility legislation compliance.
- Superior slip resistance — the ribbed, extruded PVC insert delivers high-friction grip underfoot, protecting users even in wet or heavily trafficked conditions.
- Heavy-duty aluminium construction — the extruded aluminium body is robust, corrosion-resistant and built for long-term performance in the most demanding environments.
- 11 PVC colours available — choose from high-visibility options (Yellow, White, Red, Cobalt Blue) or more discreet tones (Black, Mid Grey, Brown, Canvas, Beige, Ice Grey, Dolphine Grey) to suit any interior scheme.
- 6 lengths to reduce waste — pre-cut lengths of 1m, 1.5m, 2m, 2.46m, 2.77m and 3.22m cover standard stair widths without unnecessary off-cuts.
- Easy surface-fix installation — fix directly to concrete, timber or other solid substrates with suitable screws and plugs (not supplied).
- Suitable for indoor and covered outdoor staircases — corrosion-resistant aluminium and UV-stable PVC perform reliably in internal and sheltered external stairways.

Installation Guide
This stair nosing is surface-fixed directly to the leading edge of each step. Position the nosing with the PVC tread facing upward and the aluminium riser drop facing down the front of the step. Drill fixing holes through the aluminium wing at recommended centres (typically every 200–300mm), insert suitable wall plugs if required, and secure with stainless steel or zinc-plated countersunk screws. For a clean finish on cut ends, use an aluminium end cap or file the edges smooth. Always ensure the step surface is clean, dry, level and structurally sound before fixing.
Note: Fixings (screws and plugs) are not supplied and should be selected to suit the substrate. For concrete or masonry, use 6mm frame fixings. For timber, use 4mm countersunk wood screws.
Choosing the Right DDA Compliant Colour
DDA guidance requires a strong luminance contrast between the stair nosing and the adjacent floor surface (minimum 30 point LRV difference). As a guide:
- Dark floor finishes (dark carpet, slate, dark wood) — choose White, Yellow, Beige or Ice Grey for maximum contrast.
- Mid-tone floor finishes (medium oak, beige carpet) — choose Black, Cobalt Blue or Red.
- Light floor finishes (light stone, cream carpet) — choose Black, Brown or Mid Grey.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can this stair nosing be cut to a custom length on site?
Yes. The aluminium profile can be trimmed using a metal-cutting saw or angle grinder. Always de-burr cut edges and ensure a square, clean cut for a professional finish.
Is this product suitable for outdoor steps?
The This stair nosing is suitable for covered external staircases. For fully exposed outdoor environments, please contact us for advice on the most suitable product.
What is a rake-back nosing?
A rake-back nosing has an angled rear profile that follows the slope of the stair riser, allowing the nosing to sit flush against the vertical face of the step. This eliminates any gap between the nosing and the riser, providing a neater finish and removing a potential trip hazard.
How many nosings do I need?
You will need one nosing per step. Measure the width of each step and select the nearest available length at or above that dimension.
