Description

This light-out LED stair nosing is a commercial-style, screw-fixed aluminium step edge with a tall 48.5mm riser leg that carries an LED channel in its front face, so a line of light shines out from every step edge. It has a 77.5mm tread with an anti-slip insert, comes in anodised matt silver in full 2.8m bars or cut lengths of 1.0m, 1.5m and 2.0m, and fits existing concrete, timber and tiled stairs without retiling. Choose a standard insert in eleven colours or a heavier quartz textured insert in four. It is the profile for cinemas, theatres, auditoriums, bars and public buildings where step edges must stand out clearly when people look down the stairs in low light.

Why it works

A line of light on every edge

The LED channel sits in the face of the riser leg, behind a frosted polycarbonate diffuser. The light comes straight out of the nosing towards anyone using the stairs, so each step reads as a clear lit line, which is what darkened auditoriums and dim stairwells need.

A deep, protective nosing

The 48.5mm riser leg wraps further down the front of the step than a standard nosing, covering and protecting the step edge on concrete, timber or worn stairs while housing the light.

Two anti-slip inserts

The 50mm standard insert is a flexible PVC rated R11 on the DIN 51130 ramp test, with pendulum test values of 66 dry and 54 wet. The quartz textured insert blends PVC with silica quartz in a raised pyramid pattern, rated R11 with pendulum values of 57 dry and 47 wet, and resists oil, grease, salt and dilute chemicals in busier areas. Both sit over the fixing screws, hiding them.

  • 77.5mm tread, 48.5mm riser leg, 1.0m, 1.5m, 2.0m or 2.8m lengths
  • Light-out LED channel in the riser face, frosted diffuser
  • Standard insert in 11 colours or quartz textured insert in 4
  • R11 slip rating on both inserts

Where it's used

Cinema, theatre and auditorium steps and aisles. Bars, clubs and restaurants with feature staircases. Public buildings, offices and schools with stairwells used in the evening. Any existing concrete, timber or tiled staircase where lit, slip-resistant step edges are being added.

Choosing the right option

Choose the insert first: standard for most interiors in eleven colours, or quartz textured for busy or occasionally wet areas in white, black, dolphin grey or yellow. Then pick a colour whose light reflectance value (LRV) contrasts strongly with the stair surface, using the LRV figures above, so the step edge is clear in daylight as well as when lit. Check the riser leg suits your steps: the 48.5mm leg needs a step front at least that deep. Count lengths by step width: one 2.8m bar covers two steps up to 1.4m or three up to 930mm. Shorter 1.0m, 1.5m and 2.0m lengths cost the same as a bar, so they suit a single step or landing edge. Then plan the lighting with our natural white tape and standard driver, or tunable white and RGB tape with the remote-ready driver, and add end caps for open ends. For a shallower profile that washes the riser below, see the light-down LED nosing.

Installation, use and care

Make sure the steps are dry, clean, level and free of debris. Mark and drill the fixing positions, plug the holes, apply a suitable adhesive to the underside and screw the nosing down, then fit the insert over the screw heads. Clean the LED channel with a surface-preparation wipe before fitting the tape, and keep each 12V run to 10m or less. All mains connections must be made by a qualified electrician. Clean inserts with a neutral detergent and rinse; scrub the quartz textured insert with a bristle brush.

FAQ

Q: How is it different from the light-down nosing?
A: The light shines out from the face of a deeper 48.5mm riser leg, rather than down onto the riser below.

Q: Can I fit it to existing stairs?
A: Yes. It is bonded and screwed to finished concrete, timber or tiled steps.

Q: Is the LED tape included?
A: No. Add our LED tape, a driver and end caps.

Q: Why does a shorter length cost the same as a 2.8m bar?
A: The nosing is made in 2.8m bars only, so a shorter length is cut from a full bar and priced as one. If you can cut on site, the 2.8m bar gives you the most material.

Q: Can I use it outside?
A: The anodised matt silver finish is recommended for interior stairs.
