Description

This light-down LED stair nosing is a commercial-style, screw-fixed aluminium step edge with an anti-slip insert on the tread and an LED channel under the nose that washes light down the riser below. The profile has a 76.5mm tread and a 26mm riser leg in anodised matt silver, supplied in full 2.8m bars or cut lengths of 1.0m, 1.5m and 2.0m, with a choice of a standard insert in eleven colours or a heavier quartz textured insert in four. Specify it for offices, hotels, schools, bars, cinemas and communal stairwells where each step edge needs to be clearly visible in low light.

Why it works

Light where people look

The LED channel is angled under the front of the nosing, behind a frosted polycarbonate diffuser, so the light falls onto the riser below rather than into people's eyes. Each step edge is outlined by a soft line of light, which helps people judge the steps in dim stairwells, auditoriums and at night.

A proper anti-slip tread

The 50mm insert is the walking surface. The standard insert is a flexible PVC with an R11 rating on the DIN 51130 ramp test and pendulum test values of 66 dry and 54 wet. The quartz textured insert blends PVC with silica quartz in a raised pyramid pattern, rated R11 with pendulum values of 57 dry and 47 wet, and resists oil, grease, salt and dilute chemicals for harder-wearing areas.

Fixed to the stairs you already have

The nosing is bonded with adhesive and screwed to the step, and the insert then covers the screw heads. That makes it a retrofit solution for finished stairs, unlike tile-in profiles that must be set during tiling.

  • 76.5mm tread, 26mm riser leg, 1.0m, 1.5m, 2.0m or 2.8m lengths
  • Light-down LED channel with frosted diffuser
  • Standard insert in 11 colours or quartz textured insert in 4
  • R11 slip rating on both inserts

Where it's used

Office and school stairwells that need lit step edges for evening use. Hotel, bar and restaurant staircases where the lighting is part of the design. Cinema, theatre and auditorium aisles and steps. Communal stairs in flats, and any concrete or timber staircase being upgraded without retiling.

Choosing the right option

Choose the insert first: standard for most interiors in eleven colours, or quartz textured for busy or occasionally wet areas in white, black, dolphin grey or yellow. Then choose the colour: for clear step edges, pick an insert whose light reflectance value (LRV) contrasts strongly with your stair surface, using the LRV figures above. Count lengths by step width: one 2.8m bar covers two steps up to 1.4m or three up to 930mm. Shorter 1.0m, 1.5m and 2.0m lengths cost the same as a bar, so they suit a single step or landing edge. Then plan the lighting: our natural white tape with the standard 12V driver for simple switching, or tunable white and RGB tape with the remote-ready driver and a remote. Add end caps for open step ends. For new tiled stairs, our tile-in LED nosing sits flush with the tiles instead.

Installation, use and care

Make sure the steps are dry, clean, level and free of debris. Mark and drill the fixing positions, plug the holes, apply a suitable adhesive to the underside and screw the nosing down, then fit the insert to cover the screw heads. Fit the LED tape into the channel after cleaning it with a surface-preparation wipe, keeping each 12V run to 10m or less. All mains connections must be made by a qualified electrician. Clean the inserts with a neutral detergent and rinse; scrub the quartz textured insert with a bristle brush.

FAQ

Q: Can I fit it to an existing staircase?
A: Yes. It is bonded and screwed to finished concrete, timber or tiled steps.

Q: Does the price include the LED tape?
A: No. Add our LED tape, a driver and end caps to complete the system.

Q: Which way does the light shine?
A: Down onto the riser below each step. For light from the front face of a taller riser leg, see our light-out LED nosing.

Q: Why does a shorter length cost the same as a 2.8m bar?
A: The nosing is made in 2.8m bars only, so a shorter length is cut from a full bar and priced as one. If you can cut on site, the 2.8m bar gives you the most material.

Q: Can I use it outside?
A: The anodised matt silver finish is recommended for interior stairs.
