Anti Slip Stair Nosing

Description

Anti-slip stair nosings cut slip risk on the part of a staircase where falls most often begin. The leading edge of a tread takes the concentrated weight of every footfall, wears fastest, and is the hardest part of the step to judge on the way down.

A good nosing solves three problems at once: it caps and protects the edge, it presents a high-grip surface exactly where the foot lands, and it makes each tread clearly visible. Grip and contrast matter equally — most stair falls happen because the edge was misread, not because the surface was slippery.

How the grip is actually produced

The body of a nosing provides almost no grip on its own. The friction comes from what is set into it:

• PVC inserts — the commercial default. Good grip, chemically resistant, easy to clean and replaceable when worn.
• Rubber inserts — softer and quieter, compressing slightly underfoot to give tactile feedback at the edge. Suited to barefoot areas and indoor use.
• Silicon carbide and carborundum — hard abrasive particles bonded into the surface. The hardest wearing option.
• Ribbed or machined aluminium — grooves cut into the metal itself, channelling water clear rather than relying on a separate insert.
• GRP aggregate — grit bonded right through a fibreglass body, so grip survives as the surface wears rather than disappearing with a coating.

On nearly every system the insert is the wear part and can be replaced without disturbing the profile. That is the single most useful thing to know about maintaining a stair.

How slip resistance is measured

In the UK, slip resistance is measured by the pendulum test to BS 7976, now BS EN 16165, giving a Pendulum Test Value. It is the only method the HSE recognises.

The wet figure is the one that matters. Almost any surface performs well dry. The HSE bands wet results as 0–24 high slip potential, 25–35 moderate, and 36 or above low. Specify 65 or above where oil, grease or food waste is likely.

You will also see R ratings, R9 to R13, from the German DIN 51130 ramp test. That test uses motor oil and safety boots, so it describes an industrial floor rather than a rainy stair, and the scales do not convert — a single R10 rating can correspond to pendulum results anywhere from 20 to 60. Ask for both figures and treat a supplier who can only quote an R rating as having given you half an answer.

Choosing the material

• Aluminium — the general-purpose choice for indoor commercial and domestic stairs. Corrosion resistant, available in every profile shape and finish, with a replaceable insert. See the aluminium range.
• GRP — the highest wet grip of the common materials, typically 65–80 PTV wet, and unaffected by salt or chemicals. The right answer for external, marine, industrial and wash-down stairs. See the GRP range.
• Stainless steel — maximum durability and impact resistance for heavy industrial and hygiene-critical settings. Specify marine grade near the coast.
• Flexible PVC — bends over uneven or curved step edges where a rigid extrusion cannot follow the line.

Contrast and visibility

Grip alone does not prevent the most common stair accident. Edge definition does, and colour contrast is the cheapest way to achieve it: a light nosing on dark treads or the reverse.

BS 8300-2:2018 puts a number on it — at least 30 points of Light Reflectance Value difference between the nosing and the surrounding tread. Two colours that look different to the eye can measure very close, so check rather than assume. Our LRV contrast calculator will test a combination before you commit.

Where wiring is impractical, photoluminescent profiles charge from ambient light and glow for several hours after it goes out, which suits escape routes and heritage buildings. Illuminated profiles carry an LED strip for permanent edge definition in cinemas, stepped seating and unlit external stairs.

What the rules require

• Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992, regulation 12 — law. Floors and traffic routes must not be slippery so as to expose anyone to risk.
• Approved Document K — stair geometry: going, rise and nosing projection, for which 25mm is the limit to work to.
• Approved Document M — access, and the source of the 55mm × 55mm contrasting band for buildings other than dwellings.
• BS 8300-2:2018 — a standard referenced by Part M, not law. The 30-LRV-point recommendation comes from here.
• Equality Act 2010 — a duty to make reasonable adjustments. It replaced the Disability Discrimination Act, so "DDA compliant" is trade shorthand rather than a current legal test.

A defensible non-domestic specification is a 55mm × 55mm profile, clearing 30 LRV points against the tread, achieving at least 36 PTV wet.

Fitting and upkeep

Screw fixing is the default for anything commercial, external or carrying wheeled traffic — roughly 150mm centres on concrete, minimum three per step, one near each end. Adhesive suits smooth, sound, dry indoor substrates. Our installation guide covers substrate preparation and the mistakes that cause callbacks, and the anti-slip specification guide goes deeper on materials and sizing.

Clean to suit the traffic, keeping polish and wax off the inserts. Replace inserts once the pattern has worn flat rather than waiting for a slip. Outdoors, keep algae and moss out of the grip texture — that is a common reason a nosing tests well when new and badly two winters later.

Frequently asked questions

What PTV do I need?
At least 36 in the wet, the HSE benchmark for low slip potential, and 65 or above where the stair sees oil, grease or food waste. Dry figures are close to meaningless because almost everything passes dry.

Is an R11 rating good enough on its own?
Not really. R ratings come from an oil-wet ramp test in safety boots, which does not describe a rainy stair in ordinary shoes, and a single R rating spans a wide range of pendulum results. Ask for the PTV as well.

Which material grips best when wet?
GRP, comfortably. Published UK supplier data puts GRP nosings around 65–69 PTV wet, with some silicon-carbide products above 80 — roughly double the HSE threshold. Aluminium with a good insert performs well indoors but GRP is the specification for genuinely wet environments.

How much colour contrast is needed?
At least 30 points of Light Reflectance Value between nosing and tread, per BS 8300-2:2018. Use the LRV figures rather than eyeballing it.

Can I fit anti-slip nosings myself?
Screw-down fitting is within most competent DIY ability with the right tools. Anything involving electrical connection, or a commercial stair where compliance has to be documented, is worth having fitted professionally.

How often should inserts be replaced?
Inspect every twelve to eighteen months in commercial settings. Typical replacement is every ten to fifteen years in steady traffic, and as little as five in heavy public use. Replace once the surface pattern has worn smooth.
