Aluminium Stair Nosing

Description

Aluminium is the default material for stair nosing on UK stairs, and this is the largest range on the site — profiles covering every common stair build-up, floor covering and fixing method, in slimline through to 5mm industrial gauges.

It earns that position on a simple combination. Aluminium forms a natural oxide layer the moment it meets air, so it does not rust the way mild steel does. It is light enough to cut and fit on site with ordinary tools, and stiff enough to take trolley and barrow traffic without deforming. And the grip comes from a replaceable insert rather than the metal itself, which means a worn stair is renewed with a strip of PVC rather than a refit.

Choosing a profile shape

Shape is decided by what the stair is built from and how much of the riser needs protecting.

• Square or straight edge — a full vertical face protecting tread and riser. The standard commercial profile and the safest default.
• Rakeback — the vertical face angles back under the tread. Suits stairs with an existing raked riser and reads as less bulky from below.
• Bullnose — a rounded leading edge. Wears more evenly, softens a sharp corner, and is common in refurbishment, care homes and hotels.
• Tile-in — a thin leg beds into the tile adhesive so the nose finishes flush with a tiled tread. Specify by tile thickness.
• Push-in and channel — captures the edge of a thin covering such as LVT, vinyl or laminate rather than sitting beside it.
• Illuminated — carries an LED strip along the front face, for escape routes, cinemas and stepped seating.

Width and gauge

Width is the part sitting on the tread, and it is the main decision. Around 20–36mm suits LVT, thin tile and domestic stairs where bulk matters; 30–40mm covers general residential work; and 50–70mm is the commercial and high-traffic range. Where Approved Document M applies, work to 55mm on both the tread and the riser.

Gauge is the metal thickness, and it is what separates a profile that survives wheeled traffic from one that dishes under it: 1.5mm for light domestic duty, 2.5–3mm for general commercial work, and 5mm for industrial stairs. Stock lengths are typically 2.4m to 3.22m and cut down on site with a hacksaw or chop saw.

Measure every step individually. Flight widths commonly vary by several millimetres in older buildings, and leaving 2 to 3mm clearance at each end allows for thermal movement.

Inserts and slip resistance

The extrusion provides almost no grip on its own — the friction comes from the insert set into its channel. PVC is the commercial default, easy to clean and chemically resistant. Rubber is softer and quieter underfoot. Silicon carbide and carborundum are the hardest wearing. Single-channel profiles carry one insert, double-channel two for wider treads.

In the UK, slip resistance is measured by the pendulum test to BS 7976 (now BS EN 16165), which gives a Pendulum Test Value. The HSE benchmark is PTV 36 or above in the wet. You will also see R ratings from the German DIN 51130 ramp test, but the two scales do not convert — a single R10 rating can cover pendulum results anywhere from 20 to 60, so ask for both figures where slip performance has to be evidenced.

Finishes

Mill finish is raw aluminium: cheapest, shows marks, best kept to protected interiors. Anodised gives a hard oxide coating that cleans easily and resists corrosion, available in silver, gold, bronze, black and champagne. Powder coating offers the widest colour range and the best chip resistance, and is the practical route to a specific Light Reflectance Value where contrast is being specified rather than eyeballed. Brushed finishes hide scuffs better than polished; matt cuts glare under bright stairwell lighting.

Fixing

Screw fixing is the default for concrete, timber and steel, and for anything commercial, external or carrying wheeled traffic — roughly 150mm centres on concrete, never fewer than three per step, always one near each end. Adhesive suits smooth, sound, dry indoor substrates where fixings must be invisible, but needs the substrate above 5°C to cure. Push-in profiles clip into a machined lip on laminate and engineered board.

Meeting UK requirements

Worth separating what is law from what is guidance:

• Approved Document K covers stair geometry — going, rise, and how far a nosing may project over the tread below, for which 25mm is the figure to work to.
• Approved Document M covers access, and is the source of the 55mm × 55mm contrasting band across tread and riser, for buildings other than dwellings.
• BS 8300-2:2018 is a standard referenced by Part M, not law in itself. It recommends at least 30 points of Light Reflectance Value difference between the nosing and the tread.
• Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992, regulation 12 is law, and requires that floors and traffic routes are not slippery so as to expose anyone to risk.

A defensible non-domestic specification therefore reads: a 55mm × 55mm profile, in a colour clearing 30 LRV points against the tread, achieving at least 36 PTV wet.

Narrowing down the range

Four questions settle most orders: what is the stair finished in, how heavy is the traffic, does Part M apply, and is the fixing screwed or bonded. Those decide profile, width, gauge and insert between them.

Frequently asked questions

What width of aluminium stair nosing do I need?
Between 25mm and 75mm covers most of the market, with 50mm the common commercial choice and 30–40mm usually enough domestically. Where Approved Document M applies, work to a 55mm contrasting band on both tread and riser. Measure the tread depth first — the nosing must leave a comfortable walking surface behind it.

Which gauge should I specify?
1.5mm for light domestic use, 2.5–3mm for general commercial stairs, and 5mm where there is forklift, pallet truck or heavy trolley traffic. Gauge, not width, is what stops a profile dishing under wheeled loads.

How long does aluminium stair nosing last?
It is a two-part product, so there are two answers. The anodised extrusion commonly lasts twenty years or more in commercial service. The insert is the wear component and is normally replaced every ten to fifteen years, without removing the profile from the stair.

Can it be fitted over carpet, vinyl or tile?
Yes, with the right profile. Carpet needs a nosing that grips and retains the carpet edge, tile needs a tile-in profile matched to the tile thickness, and LVT or laminate usually takes a push-in or slim surface-mounted profile. The covering changes both the profile depth and the fixing method.

Is aluminium suitable for outdoor steps?
Yes, provided you specify an anodised or powder-coated finish and stainless fixings — A4 grade near the coast. Mill finish will chalk outdoors. In genuinely aggressive environments, salt spray, chemicals or constant wash-down, GRP outlasts aluminium.

Can profiles be cut to length?
Yes. Use a hacksaw, mitre saw or angle grinder with a metal cutting disc, support the profile both sides of the cut, then file the end smooth and touch in the exposed cut on a coated profile to stop corrosion starting there. A cut-to-length and pre-drilling service is available on request.
