Heavyweight Stair Nosing Range

Description

Heavyweight stair nosings use a thicker gauge of aluminium than standard profiles. That is the whole point of the range, and it is a more important specification decision than width, shape or finish on any stair carrying wheeled loads.

Why gauge matters more than width

Gauge is the wall thickness of the extrusion. Standard commercial profiles run 2.5–3mm; heavyweight sections run 5mm. Light domestic profiles are 1.5mm.

Under trolley wheels, pallet trucks, dropped loads and sustained footfall, a thin profile eventually dents or dishes at the leading edge. A deformed nosing is not merely cosmetic — it becomes the trip hazard the stair was fitted to prevent, and it cannot be straightened in place. A 5mm section resists that deformation, which is why it is specified in transport hubs, stadiums, distribution centres, shopping centres and hospital stairwells.

Width determines coverage and compliance. Gauge determines whether the profile is still true in ten years. On a heavy-traffic stair, specify gauge first.

Where heavyweight is the right call

• Wheeled traffic — forklifts, pallet trucks, trolleys, cages, hospital beds
• Very high footfall — stations, stadiums, arenas, transport interchanges
• Impact risk — loading bays, plant rooms, service stairs where things get dropped
• Long service intervals — buildings where taking a stair out of use for refitting is expensive or disruptive

On a dry internal office stair with foot traffic only, a 2.5–3mm commercial profile is sufficient and cheaper. See the commercial range for that specification.

Profiles and sizing

Single and double channel designs, in square, bullnose and rakeback shapes. Double channel puts two grip bands on the tread and suits deeper treads and heavier traffic.

Stock lengths are 2.44m, 2.75m and 3.22m, cut to size on site with a chop saw. Measure every step individually — flight widths commonly vary by several millimetres in older buildings — and leave 2 to 3mm clearance at each end for thermal movement. A cut-to-length and pre-drilling service is available on project quantities.

Where Approved Document M applies, work to 55mm on both tread and riser.

Replaceable inserts

Anti-slip PVC inserts sit in the channel and lift out for replacement. On a twenty-year staircase the grip surface can be renewed several times without disturbing the extrusion or the surrounding floor covering — which is the difference between a maintenance visit and a refit, and the main reason heavyweight aluminium beats a bonded or coated alternative on total cost.

Replace inserts once the grip pattern has worn smooth rather than waiting for a slip. Inspect every twelve to eighteen months in heavy public use.

Slip resistance

In the UK, slip resistance is measured by the pendulum test to BS 7976, now BS EN 16165, giving a Pendulum Test Value. The HSE benchmark is PTV 36 or above in the wet, and 65 or above where oil, grease or food waste is likely — which covers most industrial stairs in this range.

R ratings from DIN 51130 are also quoted, and R11 or above is the usual industrial shorthand. The scales do not convert: a single R10 rating can span pendulum results from 20 to 60. Where slip performance has to be evidenced, ask for the PTV.

What the rules require

• Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992, regulation 12 — law. Floors and traffic routes must not be slippery so as to expose anyone to a risk to their health or safety.
• Approved Document K — stair geometry: going, rise, and nosing projection over the tread below, for which 25mm is the figure to work to.
• Approved Document M — access, and the source of the 55mm × 55mm contrasting band for buildings other than dwellings.
• BS 8300-2:2018 — a standard referenced by Part M, not law in itself. It recommends at least 30 points of Light Reflectance Value difference between nosing and tread. Check a combination with our LRV contrast calculator.

Fixing

Screw fixing, always, on this class of stair — roughly 150mm centres on concrete, never fewer than three per step, one near each end and out of the centre wear line. Adhesive alone is not appropriate where wheeled loads are involved. Stainless fixings, A4 grade in coastal or wash-down environments.

Frequently asked questions

What gauge counts as heavyweight?
5mm aluminium. Standard commercial profiles are 2.5–3mm and light domestic 1.5mm. The extra wall thickness is what stops the leading edge dishing under wheeled loads.

Do I need heavyweight for a busy office stair?
Usually not. Foot traffic alone, however heavy, is well within a 2.5–3mm commercial profile. Heavyweight earns its cost where there are wheels, impacts or dropped loads.

Can the anti-slip insert be replaced without removing the profile?
Yes. The insert lifts out of the channel and a replacement clips in, without disturbing the extrusion or the floor covering. It is a short task per step and does not need the flight out of service for long.

What PTV should I specify for an industrial stair?
36 wet is the HSE minimum for low slip potential, but specify 65 or above where oil, grease or food waste is likely — which describes most plant and production environments.

What lengths are available?
Stock lengths are 2.44m, 2.75m and 3.22m, cut down on site. Cut-to-length and pre-drilling can be supplied on project quantities, which removes site waste and speeds installation on large flights.

Is heavyweight aluminium suitable outdoors?
Yes with an anodised or powder-coated finish and stainless fixings. In genuinely aggressive conditions — salt spray, chemical exposure, constant wash-down — GRP outlasts aluminium and grips better when wet.
