Commercial Stair Nosings

Description

Commercial stair nosings are built for staircases carrying hundreds or thousands of people a day: schools, offices, hospitals, retail units, transport hubs and public buildings. Two things separate them from domestic profiles.

The first is gauge. Commercial aluminium runs 2.5–3mm and industrial 5mm, against 1.5mm for light domestic duty. That thickness is what stops the edge dishing under trolley and barrow traffic and becoming a hazard in its own right.

The second is that the anti-slip insert is replaceable. A twenty-year staircase can have its grip surface renewed several times without lifting the profile or disturbing the floor covering — which is the difference between a maintenance task and a refit.

Specifying for a commercial stair

Four decisions settle most contract orders: the substrate, the traffic level, whether Approved Document M applies, and how the nosing is fixed.

• Profile shape — square or straight edge is the commercial default, protecting tread and riser with a full vertical face. Rakeback suits an existing raked riser. Bullnose wears more evenly and is common in care homes and hotels. Tile-in finishes flush with a tiled tread.
• Width — 50–70mm covers most commercial work. Where Part M applies, work to 55mm on both tread and riser.
• Channels — single channel for standard treads, double channel where the tread is deep enough to need two grip bands.
• Insert — PVC is the commercial default: hard wearing, chemically resistant and easy to clean. Silicon carbide grips harder where contamination is likely.

Stock lengths run 2.44m to 3.22m and cut to size on site. A cut-to-length and pre-drilling service is available on project quantities.

Slip resistance, measured properly

In the UK, slip resistance is measured by the pendulum test to BS 7976, now BS EN 16165, producing a Pendulum Test Value. The HSE benchmark is PTV 36 or above in the wet for low slip potential, and 65 or above where oil, grease or food waste is likely.

You will also see R ratings from the German DIN 51130 ramp test. The two scales do not convert — a single R10 rating can cover pendulum results anywhere from 20 to 60. On a specification that has to be defended, ask for the PTV, because that is the figure the HSE recognises.

What the rules actually require

These get quoted loosely in commercial specification, and the difference between law and guidance matters:

• Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992, regulation 12 — this one is law. Floors and traffic routes must not be slippery so as to expose anyone to a risk to their health or safety. It applies to the stair as it is today, not as it was when built.
• Approved Document K — stair geometry: going, rise, and how far a nosing may project over the tread below, for which 25mm is the figure to work to.
• Approved Document M — access, and the source of the 55mm × 55mm contrasting band across tread and riser for buildings other than dwellings.
• BS 8300-2:2018 — a British Standard referenced by Part M, not law in itself. It recommends at least 30 points of Light Reflectance Value difference between the nosing and the tread.
• Equality Act 2010 — creates a duty to make reasonable adjustments. It does not itself specify stair nosings, and it replaced the Disability Discrimination Act, so "DDA compliant" is trade shorthand rather than a current legal test.

A defensible specification reads: a 55mm × 55mm profile, in a colour clearing 30 LRV points against the tread, achieving at least 36 PTV wet. Our LRV contrast calculator will check a colour combination before you commit to it.

Fixing and maintenance

Screw fixing is the default on any commercial stair — roughly 150mm centres on concrete, never fewer than three per step, always one near each end and out of the centre wear line. Adhesive alone is a domestic and light-commercial method. Full detail is in our step-by-step installation guide.

Clean weekly in a busy stairwell with mild detergent, keeping polish and wax off the inserts — that is the fastest way to undo the slip resistance you specified. Check fixings annually and replace inserts once the grip pattern has worn smooth. Where slip risk has been formally assessed, a periodic in-situ pendulum test evidences that the stair still performs.

Related ranges

For 5mm industrial gauges see the heavyweight range. For external, marine, chemical or wash-down environments, GRP grips better when wet and is unaffected by salt. The full aluminium range covers domestic profiles as well, and the complete guide to stair nosings covers specification end to end.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a nosing commercial rather than domestic?
Gauge and insert replaceability. Commercial profiles run 2.5–3mm aluminium against 1.5mm domestic, and carry an insert that can be renewed without removing the profile. Width tends to be greater too, typically 50–70mm against 30–40mm.

Are stair nosings a legal requirement in commercial buildings?
Not as a product requirement in themselves. What binds is regulation 12 of the Workplace Regulations 1992, which requires floors not to be slippery so as to create risk, and the Building Regulations where you are building or materially altering. Approved Document M sets the 55mm contrasting band for non-domestic buildings. A nosing is the usual way of satisfying those.

What PTV should I specify?
At least 36 in the wet, which is the HSE benchmark. Specify 65 or above in kitchens, food production or anywhere contamination is expected. Dry figures tell you very little because almost every surface passes dry.

How much contrast does the nosing need?
BS 8300-2:2018 recommends at least 30 points of Light Reflectance Value difference between nosing and tread. Two colours that look different to the eye can measure very close, so check the figures rather than judging by sight.

Can inserts be replaced without closing the staircase?
On most systems yes — the insert lifts out of the channel and a replacement clips in, without disturbing the extrusion or the floor covering. It is a short task per step and does not need the flight taken out of service for long.

Do you supply for contract and tender?
Yes. Project pricing is available on bulk orders, along with cut-to-length and pre-drilling, material data sheets and test certificates for tender submissions. Send the step dimensions, the covering and the setting and we will specify against them.
