NHD05 — Heavy Duty Straight Single Channel Aluminium Stair Nosing
The NHD05 is a straight single channel, heavy duty aluminium stair nosing designed specifically for commercial, industrial and public building staircases. The straight back profile sits flush against the stair riser with a 32mm riser height and 60mm tread depth, making it the most widely specified profile in the NHD heavy duty range for carpet-covered staircase installations.
Constructed from 5mm gauge anodised aluminium, the NHD05 provides the structural rigidity required for high footfall environments — schools, offices, hospitals, retail and hospitality venues — where lightweight domestic nosings would flex, loosen or fail under sustained use. The profile channel accepts a replaceable Tredsafe® PVC anti-slip insert in 7 colour options, allowing selection based on both aesthetic requirements and LRV contrast compliance under DDA and BS8300 guidelines.

Insert Colour & LRV Selection Guide
Under BS8300 and DDA guidelines, stair nosings should provide a minimum 30 LRV point contrast against the surrounding floor surface to assist visually impaired users in identifying step edges:
- Yellow — highest visibility, mandatory in many NHS, local authority and education specifications. Best contrast against mid-tone and dark carpets.
- Black — strong contrast against light-coloured carpets and pale tile. Popular in contemporary commercial interiors.
- White — high contrast against dark carpet. Clean aesthetic for hospitality, retail and premium office environments.
- Mid Grey — versatile neutral, provides adequate contrast against lighter floors. Ideal where a subtle finish is preferred.
- Cobalt Blue — bold accent colour for branded interiors, corporate lobbies and leisure facilities.
- Red — strong contrast option, often used in fire escape routes and safety-critical stair areas.
- Channel Only — bare profile without insert. Order when replacing existing installations or where insert will be fitted separately.
Typical Applications
- Schools, colleges and universities — carpet stair blocks with high daily footfall
- Office buildings — fire escape staircases and feature staircases
- Hospitals and healthcare facilities — DDA-compliant nosings for patient and public areas
- Hotels, leisure centres and retail — appearance-critical staircases with full slip resistance
- Residential apartment buildings — communal carpet staircases
- Government and public buildings — full BS8300 and DDA compliance required
Installation
The NHD05 straight back profile is mechanically fixed to the stair substrate using countersunk screws through the tread flange. For carpet-covered stairs, carpet is fitted up to and tucked beneath the tread flange after nosing installation. The 5mm aluminium gauge eliminates flex under load, ensuring the fixing remains secure under sustained commercial use. Extender connector profiles allow adjacent sections to be joined cleanly across wide staircases — available separately.
A bespoke cut-to-length and pre-drilling service is available for staircases requiring precise dimensions. Contact us before ordering — bespoke cut and drilled orders are non-returnable.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does NHD05 mean?
NHD05 is the profile code for the heavy duty straight single channel aluminium stair nosing. The "NHD" range denotes Heavy Duty (commercial grade, 5mm gauge aluminium). The "05" identifies it as the straight back, single channel profile with a 32mm riser and 60mm tread — the most popular profile in the range for standard commercial staircase installations.
What is the difference between NHD05 and NHD06?
The NHD05 has a straight back (perpendicular rear face), suitable for standard stair constructions where the riser meets the tread at a right angle. The NHD06 features a rakeback angled rear face for stair constructions where a raked angle is required. Both profiles use the same Tredsafe® insert and achieve identical R11 and BS8300 certification.
How do I choose the right insert colour for DDA compliance?
BS8300:2009+A1:2010 recommends a minimum 30 LRV (Light Reflectance Value) point difference between the nosing insert and the surrounding floor surface. Yellow typically provides the highest contrast against medium-toned carpets and is the most frequently specified colour for DDA compliance. Full LRV data for each insert colour is available in the product datasheet on request.
Are extender profiles available for NHD05?
Yes. Clip ramp connector profiles (NHDEXT) and carpet connector profiles are available to join NHD05 sections across wide staircases. These are sold separately. Note that extender profiles are NOT compatible with the NHD22 profile.
Can the insert be replaced without removing the profile?
Yes. The Tredsafe® PVC insert clips into the channel of the NHD05 profile and can be replaced in situ without removing the aluminium extrusion from the staircase. This makes it straightforward to update insert colours or replace worn inserts in long-term commercial installations.
