Heavy Duty Aluminium Stair Nosing with Anti-Slip PVC Insert — Commercial & Industrial Grade
When stair safety cannot be compromised, this heavy duty aluminium stair nosing delivers the specification demanded by architects, contractors and facilities managers. Constructed from a thick 5mm gauge aluminium extrusion, it is engineered specifically for the demands of commercial, industrial and public building staircases — locations where standard domestic nosings simply fail under sustained footfall.
The profile is supplied in two designs to suit different stair geometries and covering types:
- NHD05 Straight — 32mm riser × 60mm tread, straight back, ideal for carpet-covered stairs in commercial interiors
- NHD06 Rakeback — angled rear face, designed where the riser meets the tread at a non-standard angle or where the profile must be recessed into the stair edge
Anti-Slip Performance Specification
The coloured PVC anti-slip insert is manufactured using Tredsafe® compound — a proprietary blend of PVC, silica quartz and polymeric plasticiser. This formulation creates a three-dimensional pyramid surface pattern that provides exceptional slip resistance under both wet and dry conditions, critical for staircases in environments where spillages, outdoor ingress or wet shoes present a constant hazard.

Insert Colour Selection Guide
Choosing the correct insert colour is not purely aesthetic — under DDA and BS8300 guidelines, stair nosings must provide sufficient Light Reflectance Value (LRV) contrast against the surrounding floor surface (minimum 30 LRV point difference recommended):
- Yellow — highest visibility, ideal for DDA compliance in public buildings, educational facilities and industrial environments. Mandated in many local authority and NHS specifications.
- Black — strong contrast against light-coloured carpet and tile. Popular in commercial offices, retail and hospitality settings.
- White — contrasts clearly against dark carpet tones. Clean appearance suited to contemporary interiors.
- Midnight Grey — versatile mid-tone option that blends with grey carpet whilst providing adequate contrast against lighter surrounding surfaces.
- Channel Only — bare aluminium profile supplied without insert. Order separately or specify when replacing inserts on existing nosing installations.
Applications
- Schools, colleges and universities — high footfall corridors and stair blocks
- Offices and commercial buildings — carpet-covered fire escape and feature staircases
- Hospitals and healthcare facilities — DDA-compliant nosings for patient and visitor areas
- Hotels, shopping centres and retail environments — appearance-conscious nosings with safety performance
- Industrial and warehouse staircases — heavy load bearing, wet-area and external-grade applications
- Residential apartment blocks — communal staircases requiring compliant anti-slip edge protection
Cut-to-Length & Bespoke Drilling Service
Standard lengths cover most installations. For staircases where a precise cut length is required, or where countersunk screw holes must be pre-drilled at specific centres, a bespoke cut-to-length and drilling service is available. Please contact us before ordering to discuss your requirements — bespoke orders are non-returnable once cut or drilled.
Installation Notes
The NHD profile is designed for mechanical fixing using countersunk screws into the stair substrate. The 5mm aluminium wall thickness allows firm fixing without distortion. For carpet-covered stairs, the profile is typically positioned at the stair edge with carpet fitted up to and tucked beneath the tread flange. On hard floor surfaces, fixing adhesive may be used in addition to mechanical fixings for additional security on heavily trafficked routes.
Extender connector profiles are available for NHD05 and NHD06 where sections must be joined across wide staircases — sold separately.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between NHD05 and NHD06?
The NHD05 is a straight-back profile — the rear face sits perpendicular to the tread. The NHD06 features a rakeback rear face, designed for staircases where the riser and tread meet at an angle, or where the nosing must be recessed flush into the stair edge. Both profiles use the same Tredsafe® insert and share the same slip resistance certification.
What LRV contrast is needed for DDA compliance?
BS8300:2009+A1:2010 recommends a minimum 30 LRV point difference between the stair nosing and the surrounding floor surface. Yellow inserts provide the highest LRV contrast in most scenarios. Specific LRV values for each insert colour are available in the product datasheet — please contact us for the full colour chart with LRV data.
Can I get a cut-to-length service?
Yes. A bespoke cut-to-length and pre-drilling service is available. Contact us before ordering with your exact stair width and required screw hole positions. Bespoke cut/drilled orders are non-returnable as they are made to your specification.
Are extender profiles available to join sections across wide stairs?
Yes — clip ramp and carpet connector profiles are available to join NHD05 and NHD06 sections. These are sold separately. Note: extender profiles are not compatible with the NHD22 profile.
What floor coverings is this compatible with?
The NHD profile is designed primarily for use with carpet and similar floor coverings (pile depth up to approximately 10mm). It can also be fitted on hard surfaces including ceramic tile, natural stone, LVT and vinyl where the 5mm gauge thickness allows clean mechanical fixing to the substrate.
Is this suitable for external/outdoor use?
The Tredsafe® PVC insert is an external-grade compound designed to perform in wet and dry conditions. The anodised aluminium profile is corrosion-resistant and suitable for covered external staircases and sheltered entrances. For fully exposed outdoor environments subject to standing water, we recommend our GRP anti-slip stair nosing range.
